‘The Velvet Underground’ Documentary: Watch the Trailer

Todd Haynes is directing a new documentary on the Velvet Underground, with release date set for October 15. The first trailer just dropped, and you can watch it above.

Titled The Velvet Underground, the film features archival footage, photos, commentary from people around the band, and interviews with the bandmembers themselves, including Lou Reed and John Cale. Andy Warhol appears, too – in the trailer he ‘introduces’ the group by saying, “We’re sponsoring a new band, it’s called the Velvet Underground.”

Director Todd Haynes is best known for feature films including Far from Heaven, Safe, and Carol. He also has directed multiple films with a focus on music, including Velvet Goldmine (a fictionalized portrait of the glam-rock era), Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (told entirely with Barbie dolls), and I’m Not There (a unique fictional take on Bob Dylan’s life and legacy, with multiple actors portraying Dylan…or Dylan-like characters).

The Velvet Underground debuts in theaters and on Apple TV on Oct. 15. A soundtrack to the film will be released that same day, including music from the Velvet Underground as well as artists who influenced them. The track list is below.
