The Joy blend Zulu traditions with a cappella on “You Complete Me”
The Joy are a band unlike anything you’ve heard on The Colorado Sound…and that’s saying a lot. A group out of South Africa, the Joy blends traditional Zulu music with a cappella. Their debut self-titled album is set for June 21, and this spring they released the single “You Complete Me.” Watch the music video above.
The five bandmembers – Pastor (Ntokozo Bright Magcaba), Duzie (Melokuhle Mkhungo), Guduza (Sphelele Hlophe), Sthombe (Phelelani Sithole) and Marcus (Sanele Ngcobo) – met in high school in Durban, South Africa. After entering a school singing competition, the students and teachers were so impressed with what they heard they encouraged them to start a band.
“Life made us friends, music made us brothers.”
The Joy in Black Major
Their name reflects their sound – hearing their smooth harmonies and feeling their remarkable chemistry will bring you immediate joy.
“You Complete Me” is an example of how simple great music can be. It doesn’t need to have fancy production, a huge variety of different instruments, or incredibly complex lyrics. If you have five guys with amazing voices and harmonies, you can create beautiful music, The Joy are proof of that.
The group is only getting started. They’ve been great at utilizing social media to grow their audience and will continue to show the world their talents.
