The Lumineers encounter a guy playing ‘Ophelia’ on the streets in Boston

It was just another day for Sam Spencer, who plays piano and was deep into a lively version of the Lumineers song “Ophelia” on a public piano on the streets of downtown Boston. And who should walk by? Jeremiah Fraites cofounder of the Lumineers (and cowriter of “Ophelia”), and the band’s creative director, Nicholas Sutton Bell.

Fraites stops, smiles, and then joins Spencer – who doesn’t recognize him at first – on the piano for a few lines. The encounter is a moment of pure surprise and joy.

“Nicholas Sutton Bell and I were walking around Boston on our day off and heard someone playing ‘Ophelia’ on a street piano,” Fraites writes on his Instagram account. “At first, he didn’t realize that I was from The Lumineers, but he was kind enough to let me hop in and play with him. Great playing with you Sam Spencer!”

The Lumineers play Coors Field in Denver on Friday, July 22.
