Celebrating Pride
Happy Pride Month everyone!
All this month we are celebrating Pride on the Colorado Sound. Listen for shout-outs and spins of your favorite music, as well as some special programs, including an episode of Music 101 on how LGBTQ+ artists helped shape music throughout the 20th century. And watch for web features and other digital stories focusing on LGBTQ+ artists and music all month long.
Pride Month is celebrated around the world during the month of June. Its roots, though, are with the Stonewall Uprising that took place in New York City in 1969. The uprising started on June 28 and took place across six days in the West Village of Manhattan. It’s now considered one of the transformative events in the fight for equality,

The first Pride march in New York City was held a year later on June 28, 1970, on the anniversary of Stonewall. Pride Day was typically the last Sunday in June, but that single-day event has since evolved into a celebration lasting the entire month. Pride is now celebrated with parades, festivals, and other special events in countries and cities around the world.
2022 Pride Events in Colorado
Below are just a handful of the Pride events taking place in Colorado this month (and next) in 2022.
- Denver is holding a free, two-day Pride Festival June 25-26 in Civic Center Park, and a Pride Parade on June 26. Denver Pride lists details on these and other events taking place this month.
- Yampa Valley Pride is holding an event in Steamboat Springs on June 25.
- Boulder’s Pride Festival is June 12 at the Boulder Bandshell.
- Northern Colorado Equality is planning a NoCo Pride event in Fort Collins on July 15.
- One Colorado has a big list of Pride Month events in Colorado.
