Geography Awareness Week pop-up music special

Having showcased an audience-voted countdown of the Top 800 Songs about Places, and also having recently asked Colorado Sound listeners to chime on where in the world they are when listening to us, we couldn’t help ourselves – we just had to step with a musical tribute honoring Geography Awareness Week.

Taking place Nov. 18-22, 2024 (it’s usually the third week in November every year), Geography Awareness Week celebrates the work of geographers around the globe. “Knowledge is power,” writes the American Association of Geographers, “and knowledge of spatial information…opens up extraordinary capabilities to solve complex problems in many areas, from urban planning to environmental conservation.”

In honor of this esteemed event, all this week from 10am to 11am MT Margot will feature songs related to places and geography. Don’t worry though, you won’t have to locate every single place on a map, and there will be no test. Our Geography Awareness Week pop-up music special is just another fun way we as an independent, noncommercial music station can celebrate the big wide world of music we all enjoy.

Songs we’ve played so far this week include “Sequestered in Memphis” by the Hold Steady, “Amsterdam” by Guster, “Panic in Detroit” by David Bowie, and “LA Lately” by Israel Nash.

As a bonus, Margot is also taking requests for songs that fit into the theme of geography – think cities, states, countries, or other places of note located anywhere in the world.
