Eyedress keeps on “Drivin'”

Eyedress (born Idris Vicuña) is an indie singer-songwriter, rapper, and producer originally from the Philippines but raised in the U.S. His family moved to Arizona when he was young, where he was introduced to punk music. He then found himself in California after his father got a job as an animator for 20th Century Fox on the show Jimmy Neutron.

While in California, he joined a punk band called the Liberal Underground. However, his punk-rock days didn’t last long as he moved back to the Philippines when he was 15 and formed the band Bee Eyes.

“My dad [was] offered a good job [in the Philippines] to be an animator, which is what he does,” he tells Weirdo Music Forever. “So we moved back there, I met my friend Julius [Valledor] on MySpace, and that’s how we started Bee Eyes. I saw the bands he listened to, like My Bloody Valentine. He asked me if I knew how to make that kind of guitar sound, and I lied and said yeah. So we started jamming, and ever since then I’ve been in bands.”

Eyedress eventually started making beats on his laptop and releasing them for free on the internet, Though he had previously been in bands, this is when his career as Eyedress officially began.

He cultivated a small following from his beats, which helped him get introduced to Filipino singer Skint Eastwood. The two collaborated on the song “Biolumine” which got him a deal with Abeano Records to release his debut EP Supernatural.

After the Philippines, Eyedress lived in London for a while and then relocated to Los Angeles, where he lives now with his wife and son.

“I don’t hate anything about LA. It saved my life,” he explains to Half Moon BK. “Out here, you can be surrounded by everything you love. All the music…. In the Philippines we had shows, but it was so rare. To live out here is like, you get spoiled.”

Fast forward to 2024, and Eyedress released his single “Drivin’.” The song (see video at the top of this page) has a relaxing dreamy like feel to it. Whether you’re watching the sunset or on a relaxing drive 😉, “Drivin’” has a very calming vibe to it. Imagine yourself as a teenager listening to records in your room while just laying back drifting away.

”Drivin’” is an earworm, But watch out, because you might find yourself singing “Drivin… drivin… drivin with my best friend Mary Jane” all day. You’re welcome.
