Durand Jones & the Indications Release ‘Private Space’

Private Space, the new album from Durand Jones and the Indications, is a sultry, groovy, disco-fueled dance party waiting to happen.

The band started as a side project between a few music students at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. They’d met and connected over their mutual love of songwriting and old soul 45s.

They played one show in 2014, but in 2015 Ohio soul label Colemine Records approached them. They released their first single “Smile” that same year.

They released their self-title debut album, then went their separate ways. However, their music had already earned them new fans, and soon they were back together. In 2018, Dead Oceans re-released their debut album. A second album, American Love Call, followed in 2018.

Private Space is the band’s third album, and it sees them pushing further beyond their initial love of classic funk and soul. The songs explore a wider range of sounds and launch the band into a world of synth-y modern soul and disco beats dotted with strings.

“There’s a lot of the band’s original DNA, but it’s not a time capsule,” says bandmember Blake Rhein. Adds Aaron Frazer, “We’re actually revealing more of ourselves, a deeper and broader look into who we are as musicians and fans.”

“At the end of the day, I just want people to close their eyes and forget where they are,” says Durand Jones. “Just the way a Stevie Wonder album does for me.”
