A weekend of firsts – all debut songs

Everyone starts somewhere.

This weekend, the Colorado Sound is spinning nothing but debut songs – the very first songs ever released from a wide range of artists. Some songs you’ll recognize, others may sound…different. Some are knockouts right out of the gate; others show that they just hadn’t found their groove yet.

Either way, though, it’s fascinating to hear where your favorite artist began on their journey to where they are now.

The Go-Go’s, for instance, released their debut single, “We Got the Beat,” on Stiff Records, and it’s an edgier, punkier sound than the version that went on to climb the Billboard charts.

R.E.M.’s first release, “Radio Free Europe,” was first released in 1981 on the tiny Georgia label Hib-Tone, and it definitely sounds different than the version that appeared on their first full-length album, Murmur

And even superstars like David Bowie (who first recorded under his given name, Davie Jones) and Robert Plant first released songs in the 1960s that were very different from the music they are known for today. Plant’s debut single was “Our Song,” recorded when he was a teenager and released in 1967 – a year before he joined Led Zeppelin. Hear it below, it just might blow your mind.
