Remembering Christine McVie

Like millions of music fans around the world, we were deeply saddened to learn that Christine McVie passed away yesterday at age 79. “She passed away peacefully at hospital following a short illness,” read a statement on her Facebook page. “She was in the company of her family.”

As a member of Fleetwood Mac, Christine wrote and sang some of the band’s best-loved songs, including “Don’t Stop,” “Over My Head,” and “You Make Loving Fun.”

Her creative input on hit albums like Fleetwood Mac, Rumours, and Tusk was undoubtedly massive. However, her recording career actually started years before.

Today, Margot aired a special hourlong, career-spanning tribute to Christine McVie, including songs from her first band Chicken Shack and her early recordings as a solo artist (she released her first album under her maiden name Christine Perfect).

The tribute also included some choice Fleetwood Mac songs, of course, as well as songs from artists such as Wilco, Jenny Lewis, and Midlake that show the enduring influence Christine has had on contemporary rock and pop music. The full track list for our Christine McVie tribute is below.

Margot also played the song “Hallelujah” by Haim, which Christine’s friend and bandmate Stevie Nicks said (in a note she shared yesterday) was one she had hoped to sing to Christine in person.

“Christine’s songs are the pop songs I’m thinking of when I say I try to write pop songs,” Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy said in a Substack post today. “I think, she was so good it was hard to not take her for granted. You know? Like a sky so clear and blue it never occurs to you that there might be someone to thank. But there is. So…Thank you, Christine McVie.” He goes on to share a cover of her song “Little Lies.”

You can read more about Christine in this interview she gave to the Guardian this past June, as well as obits on NPR and the New York Times
