John Henry was a real steel-driving man and is believed to have been tasked with hammering steel drill bits into rock to make holes for explosives then used to create tunnels. Working for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, John Henry became portrayed in song as a caricature of super-human strength. Did he really die with a hammer in his hand? It is hard to know. Either way, "John Henry" songs are Americana classics, performed by blues, folk, and county artists for decades. Their newest one - full of blissed-out-hyper-psychedelic beats with guests ranging from Leon Bridges to Mick Jones of The Clash - is We Will Always Love You, and it's our #AlbumOfTheWeek!
