Amanda Shires is full of fire on ‘Hawk for the Dove’

Amanda Shires isn’t messing around. “I’m well aware of the what the night’s made of,” she sings, “and I’m coming for you like the hawk for the dove.”

“Hawk for the Dove” is the new single from Shires, and it feels like an awakening. Though it’s far from her debut (she’s recorded half a dozen albums over a decades-long career), Shires sounds like she’s stepping into her own with a fresh new attitude. She’s bold and confident, her music edgy and electric, her voice a commanding instrument you cannot ignore. “Come on, I dare you make me feel something again,” she challenges, mixing power and desire. We’re hanging on every word.

“I want people to know that it’s okay to be a 40-year-old woman and be more than just a character in somebody else’s life,” Shires says. “The song and the visual representation of the song [watch it above] deal with the emotions that turn prey into predator.”

“Hawk for the Dove” is the first single from Shires’ new solo album Take It Like a Man, due out July 29. Shires cowrote the song with Lawrence Rothman, who also produced the album. Married to musician Jason Isbell (who plays guitar on the song), Shires is also a member of the indie supergroup the Highwomen, which includes Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, and Natalie Hemby.
